Friends of Romania

FoR is a group comprised of returned Peace Corps Volunteers and supporters from the first group back in 1999 to the current groups now serving as volunteers. Friends of Romania (FoR) is a non-profit organization that supports community projects in Romania, promotes cross-cultural awareness, and provides a social network for RPCVs and others interested in the country. FoR focuses on holding several social events per year, connecting RPCV's, and raising funds to support projects in Romania through the Peace Corps Partnership Program. Annual membership of $20 can be sent directly to FoR at P.O. Box 2525, Washington, DC 20013, or through the Returned Peace Corps Association at www.rpcv.org.

Peace Corps Partnership Program projects

A key component of Friends of Romania has been supporting projects of current Volunteers through the Peace Corps Partners Programs.  Due to tax reasons we have chosen to funnel our donations through the PCPP rather than trying to support individual projects or organizations in Romania.  Join us in celebrating the work of two of the projects highlighted below.

Oasis Foundation in Targu Mures

Ths group used funds from FOR and other donors to purchase licensed software and other educational aids for the local Children’s Library computer laboratory and for adult education courses taught through Oasis Foundation. Through the Pencils to Internet, Oasis and other participating community groups aimed to develop a new and educational experience for children and adults who do not have regular access to computers.

Calimanesti High School GLOW Camp, August 2005

For seven days, this GLOW Camp brought together 15 female high school students who had demonstrated outstanding community commitment.  In the final report, PCV organizers wrote, “One of the greatest comments [from the camp participants] we felt most proud of was ‘I learned that girls are so much better than I could have ever believed!’ We felt proud of all the girls - for their willingness to challenge themselves in new ways and discover the strength in themselves and their friends!” Merge
